New Firestorm Armada Turning Template

If there’s one minor complaint I see repeated for Firestorm Armada, it’s the turning template.

It’s pretty basic and easy to use for the most part, but I do see many people complaining about how it either slows the game down too much or how its impossible to fit in between close formation squadrons or terrain. The point about it slowing the game down isn’t everyone’s experience, but almost everyone has experienced the “how do I get the template in there?” moment.

I’ve come up with something that might help.

I sat down and designed a thin Turning template that can be slid in between ship bases and can show the limits a turn can take. There are 4 templates in total. They start from the 0″ turn template and go up to a 3″ template.

They are designed so that you place the first “inch” flush with the base of the ship you intend to move. Following the template will account for the mandatory move forward that a ship needs to complete before it can turn. Here are the pages as they will print :

I chose to get a cereal box and glue the templates down with some wood glue. I could see laminating them being another good option. I made sure the glossy side of the cereal box was on the underside after cutting them out so that they will be easy to pick up and move.

Here’s the finished product showing the underside of the cereal box and the top side print. I took the star image from Nasa’s website – so that stuff’s legit 😉

This is the 0″ TL template. As you see it’s a very simple inch octagon that allows tight loops with many of the Tier 3 ships. This one I decided to close up to the full octagonal shape for a fast circling move. If you just want to move in a manner that doesn’t include a tight turn – you can just measure where you like and treat the template as a dead zone that you can’t reach without moving ahead quite a bit first.

This is the 1″ TL template. You can use it for tight turns, or just to show where the ship cannot reach (i.e. on the space image side of it). Much like the Frigate above, you can just measure straight from the base and use the template as the ‘no go’ zone.

Here’s the 2″TL Template. As you may or not have noticed, the template includes the inch move that a ship must take when performing a 45 degree turn.

Finally the 3″ TL template. I don’t actually own a Nausicaa battleship (The only ship in the game with a 3″ TL), so I used a Terran Battleship in her place. Just imaging she’s having engine problems or something 😉

Well, that shows what I have in mind. You can also use that template to execute turns from a ship that is very close to another ship or terrain where you cannot get the official turn template in.  I’ve also uploaded a video of use if you prefer that sort of thing, or if you want to see how I move with them. You can find that here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ajr1RPHBMyA&feature=youtu.be

Finally if you have read this far – you are likely interested in actually getting the file for the templates… so here they are! 🙂
